Since the 1990's Patrick Brown, aka Pat, has been around recovery. He has always sought out connections and dreamed of helping out the community. Since he has maintained recovery since 2005 he has connected with 1000's of people. However, when he met Jennifer Priddy, aka Jenn, things would never be the same! In her own journey Jenn was able to start living the steps before she learned what the steps were while living at Serenity Star in the Austin Area. She was led by peers in recovery who were living recovery and had similar life experiences as she had. When she returned from Serenity Star, she wanted something like that in the Permian Basin! Pat and Jenn collaborated and Jenn got to work! Jenn was able to research and assess the needs here in Midland. Through her efforts and Pat's generosity, she was able to start Thriving United and the 1st Peer Supportive Recovery Residence in Midland in October 2019! They quickly started a board of directors, formed an LLC, and started helping others outside the home. But if someone was looking for services, where would the be able to go? Thriving United Recovery Center was born! Since early 2020, they have grown from 2 in number to 7 by the end of 2020! The team, aka the THRIVAMILY, helps about 15-20 people daily and is growing! Please visit the "About Us" Page to see more about Thriving United! ALSO, PLEASE DONATE, YOUR DONATIONS MEANS HOPE! UNITED WE THRIVE! Here is a story from our Director of Operations: Garrett Stewart! What does a recovering drug addict, an artist, and a director of operations have in common? They share the same body! Hi! I am Garrett Stewart, Director of Operations for Thriving United! Thriving United is a Recovery Community Organization. I also am a person in sustained and active recovery since January 31st, 2019 and that means to me that I no longer have to use drugs or alcohol and I get to heal from the hurts and habits that accompanies addiction. I came from a long line of addiction, mental illness, and all other sorts of habits and hurts. Thank God I had a safe haven while growing up, that haven was my Nana’s home. She was my biological father’s mother. She was my safety, she was love, and she was home. You know we all need somewhere to call home, safe, and to have a place where we can find love. Fortunately, I found all three in the home of my grandmother. I can still smell the stale cigarettes smoke that stuck to the white paint of her 2-bedroom apartment, the sweet tea that she had just made, and home-made macaroni or chicken and dumplins as if it were yesterday that I was there with her. We all need memories like that to hang on to. So in times of need, we can revisit and feel like we are home. After many years of addiction, affliction and desperation, I sought help, one more time! I entered the hospital broken, helpless, and homeless. A few hours later, I was in treatment, 1 more time. The guilt and shame almost made it impossible for me to re-enter due to having multiple years of recovery and a drug and alcohol counselor (who relapsed and lost his job due to relapse). However, it was either that or face prison, or worse. That was January of 2019. Today, I am on probation, I am an artist again, and I put my time as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor to work again as a director of operations for Thriving United. I work steps, I talk to others, I meditate, I pray, I help others, and I THRIVE instead of survive. What about Nana? Well, today, I work at a place that makes me feel like Nana is in the other room. There is not any stale cigarette smoke, however, there is love, acceptance, safety, and God there. Today, I am a person who gets to do his photography, connect with nature, have a relationship with God and other people and a relationship with me. Today, I am ok. Today, I am enough. Today, I am Thriving! Today is a good day to have a good day! Today I am in recovery, and for that, I am eternally grateful! |
